He told us: “I got involved when a man hit a woman and I hit the bloke – then the woman hit me for hitting her partner.”One role Mellor isn’t keen to add to his TV CV is ‘reality TV star’.
Underneath is another label with the name Sheridan Smith – and beneath that, a scrap of paper with a cartoon smiley face and the words Green Room scrawled in blue biro.
This dressing room, unusually spacious by poky West End standards, has become the backstage hang-out of choice for the company of Michael Grandage’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Ask anyone who’s met her and the superlatives about her warmth and infectious sense of humour come spilling out.
Among the usual bouquets and good luck cards are jumbo packs of tea bags and sugar; a hunk of Battenberg cake lies on a table and a pair of vertiginous heeled shoes, diminutive enough for Minnie Mouse, lie discarded nearby.
Of Smith herself, however, there is as yet no sign.
